What is Thermal imaging?

Thermal imaging basically converts thermal heat energy into visible light in order to analyze a certain object or person in the vicinity. This image produced is known as a thermogram and is analyzed through a process called thermography. Thats where thermal imaging cameras come in which are simply devices that process the captured image and display it on a screen. These images can be used for diagnosis or processed using specfic software types for further evaluation, accuracy and report output. Thermal imaging cameras helps easily take temperature without much hassle through the image on screen.

So does it help with identifying who has the virus?

Sadly the answer is no. This is because it’s main purpose is just to record or analyse temperature to be put into the system which it is not a fool proof method in order to differentiate who is positive with covid and who isnt. The Flir President, Frank Pennisi, who’s in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) experts mentioned that while thermal imaging cameras could be helpful for screening, they are not sufficient for an actual diagnosis. Additionally, thermal imaging only measures skin temperature and not actually your internal temperature which means there is no confirmation that those who pass the screening does not have the coronavirus.

Then what is the purpose of having it?

“They are… only one tool among many,” says James Ferryman, professor of computational vision, from the University of Reading. It is maybe not the most effective and guaranteed way to check easily in terms of who has the coronavirus or not. However, it’s still an important contact tracing device that is used around the whole world and it’s exponentially growing in the usage of it. Reason for this is that it is more of a precaution measure to help identify someone that is down with a fever (usually 37.6°C and above) as fever is one of the common symptoms of Covid 19 to contain the spread of it. While not the best and sure way,it is better than having nothing to seperate out individuals in the area during this pandemic.

Applications of it in Today's context

It is found almost everywhere you visit to nowadays and likely you have come across one. The application of it is endless but the popular usage of it now is mostly for medical clinical observation and inspection and quarantine. To keep it short, It is used to enable mass screening of human body temperature commonly found in train stations,shopping malls entry and exit, offices etc . With the use of blackbody real-time calibration, the temperature recorded tends to be very accurate with a range of ± 0.3 ℃. It is able to obtain around thousands of people in just a short period of time and with visible light face recognition, it may provide valuable data to the authorities for taking record of the body temperature of each person and easily idenitfy anyone that is suspected with abnormal body temperature personnel, and find out more info about the individual on areas he/she has visited and any direct/indirect contact with other patients as well.
